Merck KGaA operates as a pharmaceutical, chemical, and life science company worldwide. It operates through four divisions: Merck Serono, Consumer Health, Performance Materials, and Merck Millipore. The Merck Serono division develops, manufactures, and markets prescription drugs to treat cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS), infertility, growth disorders, and selected cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. This division provides Rebif, a drug for the treatment of relapsing MS where relapses and recovery episodes alternate; and Erbitux, a targeted cancer drug that is approved for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. The Consumer Health division manufactures and markets prescription-free drugs that primarily address health themes, such as mobility, women’s and children’s health, cough and cold, and everyday health protection. The Performance Materials division offers performance chemicals for applications in fields, including consumer electronics, lighting, coatings, printing, plastics, and cosmetics. This division provides liquid crystals based on polymer stabilized vertical alignment technologies, which are primarily used in mid-and large-sized televisions, as well as liquid crystals based on in-plane switching technology that are also used in televisions and mobile devices; and develops and markets a product portfolio of decorative and functional pigments. The Merck Millipore division offers products and services that are used for customers in the research, development, and production of biotech and pharmaceutical drugs, as well as general laboratory applications. The company was founded in 1668 and is headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany. Merck KGaA is a subsidiary of E. Merck KG.
