STEPHEN J. RYAN, M.D., 69, provides our board with wide-ranging expertise in ophthalmology and is an internationally recognized expert in the field of retinal diseases and ocular trauma, providing congressional testimony on numerous occasions in support of the National Institutes of Health and the National Eye Institute. Dr. Ryan has served as President of the Doheny Eye Institute since 1987 and as the Grace and Emery Beardsley Professor of Ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California since 1974, where he specializes in diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, ocular trauma and vitreoretinal surgery. Dr. Ryan continues to maintain a clinical practice with an emphasis on retina and macular disease and ocular trauma. Dr. Ryan was Dean of the Keck School of Medicine and Senior Vice President for Medical Care of the University of Southern California from 1991 through June 2004. Dr. Ryan is a Member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and is a member and past president of numerous ophthalmologic organizations such as the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology. Dr. Ryan is the founding President of the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research. Dr. Ryan is also a member and director of the W.M. Keck Foundation and is a member of the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation.
